This photo was taken
from a boat full of camera happy tourists floating down Indian's holy river,
the Ganges, in Varanasi (Baneres), at sunrise. I was mildly
uncomfortable at the time, pointing my camera at people minding their own
business. But the telephoto lens gave me the permission, and I had the
westerners sense of imunity that allows tourists to take pictures
of third world inhabitants and show them off to friends back home,
with the excuse that you have captured some important cultural truth, when
in fact, all you've done is taken a photo a someone washing their bum without
their permission. And then, to add insult to injury, you publish it on
the web.
